This installation depends on mutual listening and collective improvisation. In addition to our performer, the audience creates the sound using their smartphones as speakers and input devices. The performer’s sounds are fragmented and chopped and distributed as short clips to the audience’s devices. Participants can perform with the received sound snippets using gesture-controlled granular synthesis. The continuous interleaved update of the distributed audio processes creates a diffuse textured echo of the material proposed by the soloist. Granular Field is based on GrainField by Benjamin Matuszewski & Norbert Schnell.
Granular Field has been the subject of presentations at the Generate Festival and the Live performers meeting in Rome.
